“My husband has received speech services from LIU Limbic center since early spring due to a stroke he suffered. We are so happy to be receiving these services under the guidance of Mayya Teytel-Cocozza and a student in the program. During the past months my husband is showing great progress in regaining his skills. We are so pleased with the professionalism and kindness shown to us during our sessions. We feel as though we are a team working to regain the skills lost.”

“My wife, a highly regarded pathologist, suffered a stroke which seriously impaired her ability to communicate. She has been undergoing speech and cognitive therapy for over two years with slow but steady gains. Last summer, she was fortunate to connect with Mayya Teytel-Cocozza of the Long Island University, who has been of considerable help. Mayya knows how to evaluate her patient’s needs and design a course of appropriate therapy. She is alert in observing my wife’s progress and adjusting the treatment with skill and patience. My wife values and trusts Mayya and looks forward to her weekly sessions.”

“My husband who has both Aphasia and Apraxia wasn’t happy attending speech therapy sessions held at rehabilitation facilities that he’s gone to in the past. I am not certain why. We didn’t know what to expect in a virtual speech therapy setting. We found it to be very accommodating and I see that he is happy with the sessions at the virtual clinic -LIMBIC. The Supervisor and the current and prior students (internships) were very patient and very kind to him. I hope this opportunity is made available to others that suffer with brain injuries. My husband is fortunate and grateful to be in this program.”

“Mayya is an excellent Speech Language Pathologist who founded LIMBIC. She is warm and encouraging. I’ve worked with her for over a year, and my family members have noticed tremendous improvement in my cognitive abilities. My overall executive function has improved, and I’m more attentive and responsive to my family needs”

“My dad had his stroke right before covid shut everything down. As a speech pathologist, I knew how important it was for him to receive services as soon as possible to regain function, however it seemed like it was going to be impossible to get him the services he so desperately needed. I saw Mayya post on an SLP Facebook group about LIMBIC and reached out. She and her graduate students have done an outstanding job pivoting to evaluating and treating via video calls. Mayya and her students are incredibly professional and adaptive, making every session functional for my dad and changing activities as needed. I’m so thankful for everything they have done and how much progress my dad has made!”

“I want you to know what a wonderful experience the LIMBIC therapy has been for John. It’s so great to see him becoming motivated again, fifteen years after his stroke. He clearly enjoys the relationship with each of his therapists, and wants to do well for them as much as for himself. I didn’t expect the online format to be so successful, but the small screen actually seems to help him focus. All his attention is pointed there, and he’s less distracted by people or things in the room. And you are all so encouraging and patient!
When we work together at home, it’s just homework–a chore–and after many years of it, he really wasn’t seeing any progress and began to reject it. It’s so hard for him, because no matter how much we do worksheets or exercises at home, he can’t really see any progress; from his perspective, it’s always a struggle to communicate and the small improvements I can see are essentially invisible to him. The LIMBIC therapists give him great feedback and encouragement and that lets him know he’s really progressing, so he tries even harder.
After a session with your students, John has so much more speech for the rest of the day. I’m also learning new ways to help him communicate, and now that I’ve seen how to encourage sentences using the “Who, What, When, Where” prompts with a verb, we sometimes do a couple during the day, especially when we’re driving. It’s a real conversation starter; once he gets out a sentence or two, he’s on a roll and will keep talking to me. It’s been so great. Thank you all!”

“Limbic has been my introduction to working with this population. As a student, a lot of time is spent studying about these conditions, their etiologies and symptoms. Being able to work with clients and their families puts everything into perspective, which is my favorite part. The structure of Limbic is beneficial to me as an aspiring clinician because the structure allows me to learn and put what I learn to use. The clinical supervision has equipped me with the proper tools and feedback, which I believe are needed to grow into a competent clinician. The families of the clients are a joy to work with during these remote times. They make it possible for the clients to be reached by the clinicians by helping them sign on to the remote mediums and assist them as needed. They also participate in the session allowing the client to feel more comfortable which is a recipe for better results during the session. Limbic has been a wonderful experience and I would recommend it to any clinician at any level.”

“Working with Mayya Teytel-Cocozza via the Leading Innovative Multicultural Brain Injury Clinic has been a highlight throughout my graduate clinical experience. A brain injury can strip someone down to the core taking huge aspects of daily living and individualism with it. However, Mayya taught me how to begin the complex journey of helping put someone back together piece by piece and regain their sense of self. I learned to combine my academic knowledge with evidence-based practices, and most importantly, genuine human connection/rapport to provide unique, family-centered, functional speech-language and cognitive services. LIMBIC is a multi-faceted organization whose driving force is the dedication and articulate Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer, Mayya. I was able to partake in each step of a client’s therapy process; from in-depth evaluation, personalized care plans, and adaptive therapy techniques. LIMBIC focuses on providing functional therapy and encourages individuals through functional therapy strategies to become reincorporated into their family, social, and workplace lives. I have confidence that LIMBIC will continue to grow and facilitate a safe place for those with Brain Injuries to feel heard and supported.”

“LIMBIC is an amazing program. Not only is it helpful for the patients, but as a graduate clinician, I find the whole experience unique, riveting, and challenging in the best way possible. As this is my first experience with an adult patient, I could not have asked for a better clinical experience than with LIMBIC. LIMBIC gives me a great opportunity to bond with my clients, to build a rapport of trust in therapy, but also to tailor my materials to my patient, to ensure engagement and progress. Mayya Teytel-Cocozza is a great resource and an incredible supervisor. She gives me the freedom as a clinician to make plans and control my sessions, but also gives me advice, confidence, and empowers me to be the best clinician I can be.”
